Exploring the Genesis of the First Illustrated Book by Radha Dunas

Inspiration
Tibet: Drops of Magic from a Land Beyond the Clouds.
The concept for "Caterpillar Goes To Everest" stems from a personal philosophy of never saying no. Inspired by this mindset, the artist embraced the challenge in 2019, -under a request of the author who prefers to keep its identity anonymous- embarking on a journey that has been continuous and lengthy, lasting almost five years. This process has been a path of learning, during which the illustrator infused their entire personality and a mountain of love into the work.
While the South side of Mount Everest is all Nepal, the North Face shows us the beautiful Tibetan culture, which is sadly at risk of extinction. The illustrations portray this culture in a way that we can still see glimpses of it. Every object, animal, and plant depicted has a story to tell about the Everest surroundings. There's no doubt that the artist has infused the illustrations with their own unique style, creating a rich tapestry that reflects both tradition and modernity. "These illustrations are a small contribution to the preservation of Tibetan's precious cultural heritage." said Radha Dunas.

Concept Development
Breaking Bonds: The Book as an Experience of Miracle.
The magic of a book beyond the object.
As the great Umberto Eco pointed out, the book as a physical object is one of those "miracles of eternal technology," as fundamental and transformative as the wheel, the bicycle, or the spoon. The artist who created this book for children, a mother herself, knows that it is crucial to disconnect them from screens as much as possible. That is why "Caterpillar Goes to Everest" breaks the mold of its category, proposing a reading time longer than standard, allowing the reader to immerse in a dreamlike and timeless atmosphere. 37 openings to dream in the mountains of Everest and forget the passage of time.
"I view the book as a distinctive, one-of-a-kind experience each time it is read. It is akin to a portal that allows readers to immerse themselves in a dimension beyond the constraints of time," states Radha Dunas.

Illustrations and Design
A material vision of paper for an artist who grew up in a ceramics laboratory.
The illustrations are meticulously handcrafted in acrylic to capture the spirit of the story and inspire young readers to look curiously at the world around them. The illustrations are very rich in color and texture, the artist has a unique way of treating the paper: "For me the paper is not a flat thing, I push, sand, and reveal 3d forms from the paper as if it where clay" said the illustrator.
My Inner Transformation
Self-Reflection
The process of creating this book was a journey of self-discovery, prompting me to confront my own fears and embrace my potential.
Creative Growth
This project was such a wonderful experience for me! It really encouraged me to try new artistic techniques and to develop my storytelling abilities. It's such a joy to create images that will bring the kids' imaginations to life with every reading!
Purposeful Living
I was really moved by the book's message of resilience and perseverance. It really resonated with me on a personal level. And the process of making the book was an amazing journey of self-discovery for me as an artist.
The Goal: A Free CO2 Footprint Book

Environmental Responsibility
I believe in the power of art to inspire positive change. This book is a testament to my commitment to sustainability.

Carbon Offset
"My goal is to create a book with a minimal environmental impact by offsetting the carbon footprint of its production".

Sustainable Practices
Choosing eco-conscious printing materials and collaborating with suppliers who prioritize sustainable practices is merely the starting point. We go beyond by integrating sustainable actions into every aspect of the book's journey, all the way to its final destination. This is why Biochar plays a crucial role in offsetting the book's entire CO2 emissions.

Environmental Education
"I am convinced that true wealth comes from land. I am committed to playing my part in cleaning up pollution because it is a matter of great importance to me." This book revealed the power of purposeful storytelling: The CO2 Anchor Project by Biochar Universe begins with "Caterpillar Goes To Everest," a carbon-neutral children's book. This book is set to be a game-changer in the world of children's literature. It's self-published on Amazon KDP in November 2024 and is leading the way for carbon neutrality among children's book publishers.

"Caterpillar Goes To Everest"
A tale of fear, dream, courage, and adventure…
…an adventure on the roof of the world
"The making of this book it's like the book itself. It toke me more than 4 years to complete the opera and it was an amazing journey at a personal level as much as professionally." Radha Dunas.
The Book
The tale behind the book:
"The people and their experiences are what make this book and exotic, rare and very unique piece of art." Said the illustrator.
The 10x9.84 inch book format is ideal for a first reading experience, as the text is presented in all capital letters. This size and formatting is well suited for the target audience of children ages 5 to 10, as well as curious adults. This is a unique and very special illustrated book by an unpublished new artist.
The 37 illustrations that appear throughout the book are entirely handcrafted using acrylic paint on paper. This artistic medium lends a unique and engaging visual style to complement the story.
In her old blog the artist writes: "It has been a long way to get where the project is now, we are at the beginning of spring 2022 and I have officially started coloring all the illustrations. There are a couple of reasons why the road has been so long and one of them is that I had to find my own style of drawing and... coloring. Especially the coloring was the hardest research until I found my element. I tried watercolors, pencil colors, and finally I decided to work with acrylics, using all the principles I learned during the experimental period".
Its specialty is an ingredient that is very expensive today, in the words of the artist:
"This is a book born and made with love, without time pressure, but following the creative process with intensity and in deep connection with intuition."
Caterpillar goes to Everest has the magic recipe in its DNA to become a classic, because it has the archetypal coherence that makes the reading experience a universal journey.
The Artist
"Creativity rules my life and that means a lot of clutter because I always have several things going on simultaneously, -when I said things I mean projects apart from everyday life-. With three small children the voice of my creativity started to torment me because of the need to do something that would not be destroyed in less than 12 or 24 hours. And in this process of inner search, the story of “Caterpillar” -the illustrated book- came into my life to be illustrated.
The connection with my hands was something I always had since I was a child, I learnt to cook since I was 6 or 7 years old, then I made stoneware pottery and living in the countryside I always had something natural at hand to play with, maybe transform it and create something new.
The power within my hands is something natural and every human being has it; also being raised in a natural context gave me the chance to be aware of that power and gave me the possibility to exercise it. But then I grew up, I had a degree in hotel management and my journey toke me around deserts and forests and by the the middle of my thirties my soul was looking for the expression of the line, my soul was thisrty of connection with my own hands light and I started in 2012 working in the issue of hand mending for women. I did a course, I learned a new trade, I set up a laboratory and I worked with some women, but for external circumstances like the context of the place where I live and other reasons that I don’t understand, it didn’t work at all. I was passionated and very good doing it but It was not the work of my dreams. I think that the subconscious speaks to us in a way that rationally we consider literally, instead, the language in which the desires arise is figurative of a symbolic meaning. Then I started to work on the idea of creating some handcrafted “pingnatas” and in that moment I started my journey to the research of the line in drawing. I found a source of art aligned to my effervescent creativity by looking shyly at the illustration job. The pandemia put me in the right path beacuse nobody was worried about making kids parties and I forgot about the “pignatas” so I started illustrating Caterpillar,-because another magic synchronicity of life- my first illustrated children’s book. Since then I draw, and paint and every time I feel fear, happiness, love, I feel I’m alive." Radha Dunas. Rome, June 2023
