InspirationTibet: Drops of Magic from a Land Beyond the Clouds. The concept for "Caterpillar Goes To Everest" stems from a personal philosophy of never saying no. Inspired by this mindset, the artist embraced the challenge in 2019, -under a request of the author who prefers to keep its identity anonymous- embarking on a journey that has been continuous and lengthy, lasting almost five years. This process has been a path of learning, during which the illustrator infused their entire personality and a mountain of love into the work. While the South side of Mount Everest is all Nepal, the North Face shows us the beautiful Tibetan culture, which is sadly at risk of extinction. The illustrations portray this culture in a way that we can still see glimpses of it. Every object, animal, and plant depicted has a story to tell about the Everest surroundings. There's no doubt that the artist has infused the illustrations with their own unique style, creating a rich tapestry that reflects both tradition and modernity. "These illustrations are a small contribution to the preservation of Tibetan's precious cultural heritage." said Radha Dunas.
Concept DevelopmentBreaking Bonds: The Book as an Experience of Miracle. The magic of a book beyond the object. As the great Umberto Eco pointed out, the book as a physical object is one of those "miracles of eternal technology," as fundamental and transformative as the wheel, the bicycle, or the spoon. The artist who created this book for children, a mother herself, knows that it is crucial to disconnect them from screens as much as possible. That is why "Caterpillar Goes to Everest" breaks the mold of its category, proposing a reading time longer than standard, allowing the reader to immerse in a dreamlike and timeless atmosphere. 37 openings to dream in the mountains of Everest and forget the passage of time."I view the book as a distinctive, one-of-a-kind experience each time it is read. It is akin to a portal that allows readers to immerse themselves in a dimension beyond the constraints of time," states Radha Dunas.
Illustrations and DesignA material vision of paper for an artist who grew up in a ceramics laboratory. The illustrations are meticulously handcrafted in acrylic to capture the spirit of the story and inspire young readers to look curiously at the world around them. The illustrations are very rich in color and texture, the artist has a unique way of treating the paper: "For me the paper is not a flat thing, I push, sand, and reveal 3d forms from the paper as if it where clay" said the illustrator.
